At Benjamin Britten Academy, we are committed to ensuring that every student develops the reading skills needed to succeed across all subjects and in later life. To support this, all students in Years 7–11 are expected to use Reading Plus as part of their weekly homework.

Why Reading Plus?

Reading Plus is a personalised online programme that builds fluency, comprehension, and vocabulary. It adapts to each student’s level, helping them strengthen their reading confidence and stamina while making measurable progress. By embedding it into homework for every year group, we are ensuring consistent practice that has a direct impact on how confident students are in reading independently as well as giving each student access to a personal library of texts at home covering fiction and non-fiction. 

The more students read, the more texts they will have access to and be able to choose from.

Weekly Homework Expectation

Students must complete 60 minutes per week on Reading Plus, or 6 lessons (5 Reading lessons and 1 Vocabulary lesson) – whichever happens first. This ensures regular, focused practice that develops essential literacy skills.

Step 1: Access the Discovery Education Login Page

You should see a login screen with options for Google or Microsoft sign-in. Choose Google. 

If you have found Discovery Education through a Google search, the website will probably be set to the United States, and your school login will not work. To fix this, click the country setting in the top right-hand corner of the page and change it to United Kingdom. You can then sign in as normal.

Step 2: Login Using Google (School Account)

Click the "Google" or "Sign in with Google" button on the login page

You will be taken to a Google sign-in screen

Enter your school username (your school email address)

Click "Next"

Enter your school password

Click "Next"

If prompted, you may need to authorise Discovery Education to access your account – click "Allow"

You should now be logged into Discovery Education where you can select Reading Plus to access your account.

Supporting Your Child

Please encourage your child to complete their Reading Plus homework each week. Regular use will not only help with English but will also strengthen their ability to access all subjects with greater confidence.

2. The page won’t load – what should I do?

Check your internet connection.

Try a different browser (Chrome works best).

Refresh the page or restart the device.

Use the helpsheet below to clear Cookies and Cache and try again. 

6. I’ve completed 60 minutes but not 6 lessons – does it still count?
Yes – students are expected to complete either 60 minutes OR 6 lessons (5 reading, 1 vocabulary) each week, whichever comes first.

4: Can I turn off the Guided Window for my child?

The Guided Window is an essential, powerful feature of the program and cannot be turned off. As students increase their ability to successfully comprehend texts with greater reading efficiency, Reading Plus responds by transitioning them to more traditional reading formats. Text scaffolds are gradually removed in accordance with each student’s reading rate. This helps students sustain attention and assists them with transferring the increased efficiency they attain to all of their reading activities.

5. The program is moving too fast or slow. I think it needs to be adjusted. What do I do?

Reading Plus is designed to automatically provide students the instruction that is "just right" for them. It adapts itself to provide the appropriate level of challenge at all times. Make sure your child is completing the programme as they have been shown and asked by sitting with them for a few lessons, then if you are still worried it is incorrect please contact your child's teacher. 

6. Does Reading Plus work on a laptop or an iPad? 

Reading Plus runs on laptops, desktops, iPads and tablets. Due to the screen size, we wouldn’t recommend using Reading Plus on a smartphone.

7. The screen says my child is On Hold. What do I do?

This message will appear if your child has been struggling with his or her Reading lessons for an extended period of time. When this message appears, your child will need to speak with his or her Reading Plus teacher to release the Hold and make it possible to continue working in the Reading component. This can be done Monday to Friday.

You may want to use the opportunity to check in with your child about their Reading progress. It’s also a good time to remind young readers to use their ReReads every lesson and discuss other comprehension strategies that can improve their scores.
