Bicycle Safety

Now that the nights are drawing in, all scholars who ride to school are advised to have lights fitted to their bicycles and to ensure that reflectors are clean and unobstructed. Scholars, parents and carers are reminded that bicycles are deemed a vehicle by law, and that under the Road Vehicles Lighting Regulations (2009), it is a legal requirement for lights and reflectors to be fitted to the front and rear of a bicycle in use on public roads in the dark or in reduced visibility. Cyclists who ride in the dark without lights pose a risk to themselves, motorists and pedestrians. Consequently, they can be subject to a Fixed Penalty Notice of £50 issued by the police.
